Conversation sonore avec Jazz
Matisse. 1941–1954

From March to July 2026

Grand Palais

IRCAM / CENTRE POMPIDOU

This exhibition highlights Henri Matisse’s final years of creativity, between 1941 and 1954. A room specially dedicated to the Jazz album, considered one of the pinnacles of artist’s books, features an electroacoustic creation by Claudia Jane Scroccaro. The composer offers an immersive and continuous soundscape that allows for individualized listening fragments. This is a direct echo of the structure of Matisse’s book, where each plate can be viewed separately, while still forming part of a larger whole.

Project Overview

The question is not stylistic. I wasn’t trying to write ‘jazz music’. What interested me was the process of translating Matisse’s gesture into sound—his way of generating figures, cutting them out, putting them back into play, and making them interact.

Exploring the dialogue between visual art and sound

As part of its partnership with Centrepompidou, Mirabaud supports initiatives that connect artistic disciplines and perspectives.

In this video, composer Claudia Jane Scroccaro and drummer Janco Boy Bystron share how Henri Matisse’s Jazz inspired a contemporary musical sound installation, developed at IRCAM.
